Toronto+Vancouver City of Labyrinths Project

Today is Day 26 of Ramadan 2020.

This video is from my journey to Madinah, Saudi Arabia in May/June of 2011.

I was walking from my youth hostel to visit Masjid Qiblatain.

Masjid Qiblatain is known for having two Mihrabs, or Prayer Niches.

Originally,

Muslims had faced north west from Madinah towards Masjid Al Aqsa in Jerusalem when praying.

A time came when the Direction of Prayer, the Qibla, was turned south east towards Makkah.

Hence,

The Masjid with Two Qibla.

En route,

A traffic island in the distance somehow caught my curiosity.

Alhumdulillah,

A Triangle Topiary Hedge Labyrinth !

Discovering this was a HUGE moment for me.

Muslims in The Holy City of Madinah were also making Labyrinths !

Afterwards,

I found a a small playground near Masjid Qiblatain.

In that park,

I outlined a simple three lane Classic Labyrinth in the sand and walked it.

Turning north and south and east and west.

Not unlike the Turn in Congregational Prayer Direction from Jerusalem to Makkah in the Masjid I was about to enter and visit.

Yes,

This is one of my Stone Labyrinths !

Constructed by carefully placing stones,

Into a five lane Labyrinth design,

Located on Woodbine Beach in Toronto’s East End.

Giant Clover Leaf Triple Spiral Triskelion Labyrinth I made from stones earlier this year located at Woodbine Beach in East Toronto is slowly losing cohesion, losing its design, stone by stone, rock by rock, and step by step . . .

My current Giant Outstallation Art is a Triskelion triple spiral Labyrinth made from stones gathered from all along Woodbine Beach in East Toronto.

The Sir Casimir Gzowski Park wading pool was my second labyrinth stop on this Thanksgiving Sunday 2011.

Having biked from Howard Junior Public School after experiencing their Species of The Humber Watershed playground labyrinth, I was en route to Butterfly Park just west of the Humber River. The original intention for the day was to create a giant Butterfly shaped labyrinth design. It has been on my mind for the past two summers, and today I finally made the time.

Watching a mother and son walk my wading pool labyrinth brought a smile to my face. Looking over to children climbing the nearby playground equipment, my eyes were drawn to the empty spot on the beach immediately south of the boardwalk.

As often happens in my labyrinth building, serendipity takes over and something else, somewhere else gets built first.

Only a moment was needed to decide to abandon plans for the Butterfly Labyrinth. Maybe it will get done next summer? Or the summer after that?

Today was our first real summer day, heat and humidity wise, yet I hadn’t created any labyrinths on the beach this season.
