Directions and process

“I was commissioned by Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies to create this mural.

At first,

we were looking to create a design that would represent Muslims in Vancouver.

It immediately felt like an overwhelming task,

because one piece of work won’t do any justice to the complexity and uniqueness of these people.

So I took a step back and decided to design this mural for all of the minorities in this city.

I wanted to Illustrate one of the many struggles minorities and immigrants face:

cultural and identity differences.

These differences might feel like a burden when they don’t fit into a society you’re trying to adjust to.

We do not have to justify our culture, traditions and identity.

We’re all so different for a reason.”

why can’t they see us?

For when others want you and I to fit into this one image they have created.

We are different for a reason.

I designed this mural using Arabic square Kufic script to illustrate a verse from the Qur’an that says

“We have created you from male and female and we made you into tribes and nations that you may know each other” (49:13)

“Here’s the thing I’ve been working on for the past couple weeks!!🎉✨

By creating this mural “Why can’t they see us?”

I’m hoping to challenge all of us as a community.

When my family and I moved here,

I felt like I’m out of this planet.

Like all the time.

Unfortunately some did not make the effort to understand and learn where I come from.

What my culture is like.

Instead,

they gasped and looked at me strangely.

So here is a sweet reminder for you all to genuinely get to know one another with open mind and acceptance.

Cause hey!

One life cannot experience everything this life has to offer. .”

It used to be that when I searched online for “Labyrinths” and ““Islam“, almost nothing turned up, except my own blog posts, and my own images. بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم وَعَلَى الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوا أَنْ لَا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ #سورة #توبة
آیه ۱۱۸ In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful And the three who were left behind to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

“For this project, I mixed calligraphy with the lecture about Qur’an (by using Surat Al-Fatiha) and that about interpretations…

“In fact, for this project, I created a labyrinth out of the first Surah in the Qur’an (Surat Al-Fatiha) by using a very unique type of calligraphy.”

“The reason why I mention interpretation is that the way the Surah was represented is full of meanings. I believe the Qur’an is a very powerful work of art where the readers get lost, just like Alice did in the wonderland…

“In fact, this sheds the light on the importance of interpretations and ijtihad in Islam since once ayah in the Qur’an can have many meanings. Getting lost in the Labyrinth and finally seeing the light and finding the way out with a rational interpretation is what makes the Qur’an experience very unique for Muslims and non-Muslims.

“As a side note, I wanted the calligraphy style to be one where there is no obvious end in the words to represent some situations we can face nowadays, where some debates are endless and where you can see neither the end of the arguments nor that of the debate…

“I hope you enjoyed the labyrinth of Qur’an. Please read it. You might get lost. But hopefully, you will find yourself fast enough. That is all that matters.”
